Users warned they may be signing up to expensive mobile phone service, not getting concert tickets
IT security and data protection firm Sophos is warning Facebook users about the latest viral scam spreading on Facebook. The scam claims to offer free tickets to a Justin Bieber concert with updates appearing on Facebook reading:
"WOW! Justin Bieber Is Giving Away Free Concert Tickets Now"
The link then tricks Bieber fans into giving permission for a rogue application to post updates on their Facebook wall and status claiming that the Facebook user “has just snagged 4 free tickets to see Justin Bieber” with the headline “Justin Bieber Free Concert Ticket Giveaway!” These messages are then shared with all of the user’s Facebook friends in order to further spread the link.
“This is a dirty rotten trick to make money out of Justin Bieber’s young fans. As teeny boppers hunt for free tickets to see their pint-sized idol, they are told to enter their mobile phone number which signs them up for a premium rate service that will cost £4.50 per week,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. “Facebook users need to start thinking more carefully about messages like this that are shared by their friends, especially when asked to install an application that can access their Facebook profile. Not only are users signing up to a costly charge on their mobile phone bill, but they are also exposing their personal information and endangering their online friends.”
Impacted users should delete references to this scam from their wall, and remove the offending application from Account/Application Settings.
More information about the attack can be found on Graham Cluley’s blog.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that soon you’ll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Eminem, Linkin Park, Usher, Paramore, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, B.o.B and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at the nominees in the Best New Artist category.
By design, the MTV Video Music Awards are always looking back at the work of the previous year and honor the artists who have delivered the best work in the world of music videos. But there is one category that looks squarely to the future, and that is the annual Moonman for Best New Artist. It’s one thing to make a big splash in the beginning, but the winners of the Best New Artist prize tend to be those who have the best potential to come back to the VMAs again and again. Superstars like Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Eminem, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent and Lady Gaga have won Best New Artist in the past. (To be fair, so have the likes of Michael Penn, Natalie Imbruglia and Macy Gray.)
This year’s crop includes breakout superstar Justin Bieber, indie favorites Broken Bells, dance-heavy ladies man Jason Derulo, digital gypsy Ke$ha and Young Money First Lady Nicki Minaj. Each have carved out their own piece of the music world in the past 12 months, and each one would certainly carry the banner of Best New Artist well. But considering he’s only nominated for a single award, wouldn’t Bieber have to go home with this one? Still, either Nicki Minaj or Ke$ha could throw a hip-hop-flavored curve ball, and Broken Bells and Derulo certainly have their fans. It’s a wide open race, and it will come to its stirring conclusion when the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards go live.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 for Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

What do Justin Bieber and the Maryland Transit Administration have in common? To the delight of area teeny boppers, Bieber is coming to town for a concert at the Maryland State Fair and the MTA railways are getting ready for overwhelming “Bieber Fever”.
The blond and bushy haired pop star is expected to perform in front of a sold-out crowd at the fair in Timonium this Sunday. The MTA has responded by extending light-rail service hours to ease traffic congestion.
Light rail will open at 7 a.m. operating every 60 minutes until 11 a.m. Then evening trains will operate from 8 p.m. until midnight every 30 minutes. The last trains will depart Timonium at midnight.
Extended service also includes all regular stops between Cromwell Station/Glen Burnie and Hunt Valley, including Timonium Station at the doorstep of the fairgrounds.
The fare for light rail is $1.60 each way ($0.55 for senior citizens and people with disabilities with valid identification), though cost may be of no concern to any Bieber fan trying to make it to the concert. In fact, the 15,000 or so people who populate the town of Timonium all may just show up and it could likely be the biggest event there thus far.
The 15-year-old, 5-foot-3 1/2 inch (ish) star has grabbed the hearts of fans around the world including one very large man named Shaquille O’Neal. They both competed in the basketball player’s show called Shaq Vs. where he takes on celebrities in their chosen field. Bieber was one of them.

It’s Justin Bieber‘s world, we’re just living in it.
At least that holds true if you’re a girl between the ages of 6 and 16 and happened to be at the Garden Tuesday night for Bieber’s “My World” tour.
They’re going to have find a new way to measure decibels to calculate the shrieks that greeted the Bieb when he took the stage. Both the intensity and the pitch of it threatened to overwhelm anything that happened on stage.
Of course, that’s as it should be with teen idols. It’s their job to provide the cleanest possible slate for the fans to project their fantasies upon.
As it turns out, Bieber presents a cleaner slate than any teen star has in decades. He tipped off his awareness of it right in last night’s wardrobe.
He appeared in pure white.
Similarly, the 16 year old shunned the more informed bumps and grinds of the last generation of teen idols: the ‘N Syncs and Backstreet Boys. They seem like Chippendale hunks compared with him.
With his apple-cheeked visage, pageboy bangs, and doe-like eyes, Bieber represents the most androgynous teen idol since the ’70s heyday of David Cassidy and Donny Osmond. His vocals follow suit, showing only the faintest sign that puberty may be on the horizon.
Bieber’s voice has been the subject of some controversy in his career, due to his apparent use of auto-tune in the studio.
Certainly, in the more fiercely choreographed numbers last night he seemed enhanced by machine. Not that it proved flattering. The contraptions made him sound like an electrified chipmunk.
Bieber may be sensitive to the issue. By the third number he brought out a ballad, “U Smile,” showcasing a creamy and clearly live instrument.
He also brought on the first of many guests – Boyz II Men, whose harmonies meshed easily with his.
Bieber’s guests didn’t just show up just to cheer him on. An appearance earned them a spot in a live, 3-D movie being filmed for future release. That inspired cameos from Bieber’s mentor Usher on “Somebody To Love,” Jaden Smith (son of Will) on “Never Say Never,” and fellow teen star Miley Cyrus on “Overboard.”
While the last-named pairing had the most vocal power, the stars hardly delivered on the song’s romantic yearning. It seemed like Bieber was singing to an older sister rather than a love interest.
Then again, that’s much in keeping with the whole Bieber gestalt. Right now, he’s puppy love personified.

Justin Bieber, who postponed a New York State Fair show Sunday because of a sore throat, appears fine and ready for his Allentown Fair show, the fair’s marketing director says.
Bonnie Brosious says she’s had conversations with Bieber’s representatives, and they assure her “Everything is OK” for Bieber’s sold-out show Saturday at the fair’s grandstand.
Bieber, who had been fighting throat problems, postponed his Sunday show, but performed Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, where he reportedly brought out R&B group Boyz II Men to sing on “U Smile,” Usher to sing on “Somebody To Love,” Miley Cyrus on “Overboard,” Jaden Smith for “Never Say Never,” Sean Kingston for “Eenie Meenie” and Ludacris on “Baby.”
The concert was being taped for Justin’s 3D concert movie, in theaters later this year.
Bieber will appear with Kingston at Allentown Fair.
He is scheduled to make up the New York fair show Wednesday, and is scheduled to play Essex Junction, Vt., on Friday before coming to Allentown.
The Allentown Fair show sold out the day tickets went on sale March 28, with most tickets sold in less than a half hour.

On Tuesday night (August 31), Justin Bieber took over the world’s most famous arena (New York City’s Madison Square Garden) and trotted out a team of superstars for the 16-year-old pop superstar’s biggest concert to date. The concert included appearances by Miley Cyrus, Usher, Boyz II Men, Ludacris and Jaden Smith (as well as regular guest star and opening act Sean Kingston), and it saw Bieber truly coming into his own as a dynamic stage presence. He was able to hold his own with everybody, be it his tag-team with Smith on “Never Say Never” or his duet with Cyrus on “Overboard.” In a little under a year, he has gone from a kid who managed to whip off a few impressive Internet videos to a charismatic star who had no trouble captivating the sold-out crowd at MSG.
That bodes well for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, which includes Bieber among the roster of performers (a list that also includes Eminem, Drake, Paramore, B.o.B, Kanye West, Florence and the Machine and Linkin Park). Yesterday, we asked exactly which song Bieber should unleash at the awards, and fans seemed to prefer the idea of Bieber teaming up with mentor Usher (who will also be performing at the show) for a take on their remix of “Somebody to Love.” That track won the voting in the poll, taking home 34 percent of the votes cast. “Never Say Never,” the duet with Smith, came in second place with 21 percent, while “Baby” (Bieber’s biggest hit to date) came in third with 14 percent. “One Time” (the singer’s first breakout hit) picked up 10 percent (general sentiment on that song was that it was too old), while “U Smile” and “Runaway Love” (the remix that includes Kanye West and Raekwon) each grabbed eight percent. That left “Eenie Meenie” at the rear with five percent.
Whatever he ends up performing, it will certainly be a memorable VMAs for Bieber, who will be competing for the Moonman for Best New Artist (for “Baby”) against the likes of Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Jason Derulo and Broken Bells.

He stands at a rumoured 5″4 to Shaquille O’Neal’s giant 7″1 inches.
But Justin Bieber was certainly able to give the former basketball star a run for his money at his own game.
The diminutive singer gave O’Neal the runaround on the basketball court as part of the sporting star’s reality TV show Shaq Vs.
The pair cut an unlikely duo as they competed in a series of challenges on the programme which sees O’Neal, 38, take on various celebrities in their sphere of excellence
Bieber’s teen team ‘beat’ O’Neal at basketball on the final shot with the score tied six-all.‘Playing basketball on Shaq’s court was really cool. I had a lot of fun,’ said the 16-year-old following the mini match.
The pair also competed in a contest to see who could stay underwater the longest
And following the basketball match, O’Neal tried to get his own back on Bieber by holding a dance-off with him.
But Bieber’s smart moves seemed to outshine the gangly sports star, with the pint size Baby singer pretty pleased with the outcome.
‘Me and my man @the_real_shaq on “SHAQ vs” last night – EPIC DANCE BATTLE,’ he tweeted.
The show culminated with O’Neal joining Bieber on stage for a concert in Florida.

Bieber-mania hits Timonium this weekend. And the Maryland State Fair may never be the same.
“We’ve never had anything like this before, not for the state fair,” says Andrew Cashman, the fair’s assistant general manager. “It’s unbelievable.”
How unbelievable? The 12,000 general admission tickets to Sunday’s concert sold out in 18 minutes. Plenty of tickets remain available for those willing to pay scalpers’ prices, which start at about double the original cost of $47.50 and head up from there. With such a huge crowd expected, fair organizers had to come up with special guidelines to ensure fans weren’t clogging the fairgrounds hours beforehand to get the best seats.
The solution: armbands will be distributed Sunday beginning at 8 a.m., allowing fans to go home (or, better yet, enjoy the rest of the fair) before coming back at 5:30 p.m. Then, depending on the color of their armbands, fans will be let into the racetrack infield in groups of 1,000. Attendees will doubtless start lining up for armbands at the crack of dawn Sunday.

On April Fool’s Day, tween star Justin Bieber “took over” the Funny or Die website, appearing in several skits, poking fun at his image and spoofing popular YouTube videos with bits such as “Bieber Goes to the Dentist.”
Now months later, Bieber Fever has begun to wear off. So who will be the next star to dominate the comedic website?
“Easy A” actress Emma Stone, who says she’ll soon film some sketches for the site.
“We’re doing a Funny or Die thing; I think I’m taking over the website. I’m flipped out,” the 21-year-old gushed during an interview this week in Beverly Hills while promoting her upcoming comedy, out Sept. 17.
Stone — who has had supporting roles in smaller comedies such as “The House Bunny,” “The Rocker” and “Superbad” — finally gets the chance to show off her funny girl chops with “Easy A.” She stars as a brassy teenager who mistakenly becomes known for her sexual prowess.
Asked how similar her Funny or Die stint will be to the Bieber takeover, Stone said, “I’m not sure if we’re doing the exact same thing, but I know there’s a live stream interview and I’m taking over the Twitter. We are filming some stuff, but I’m not sure what,” said the actress, who has now returned to Mississippi, where she’s in the middle of a four-month shoot for the DreamWorks drama “The Help.”
On Thursday, she said, she was supposed to have a day off from promoting “Easy A” and shooting the new film — until the Funny or Die crew decided to head to the South to film with her.
